Johannes Wiedenhofer has been awarded the 2026 Composition Prize

The composer Johannes Wiedenhofer, born in Munich in 2005, has been awarded the 2026 Fanny Mendelssohn Composition Prize. He began composing at the age of nine. He is currently studying music theory in Munich and composition at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Johannes Maria Staud.
Wiedenhofer has received numerous awards, including at “Jugend komponiert”, the Andreas Werckmeister Prize, a prize from the Arnold Schönberg Center Vienna, and the City of Freising’s Cultural Promotion Prize.
His collaborations with the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra have been particularly formative. Highlights included the world premiere of his orchestral work “Schnell” in 2024 under Sir Simon Rattle, as well as further international performances in Seoul and Munich. Since 2025, he has also been supported by the German National Academic Foundation.
The commissioned work, which will receive its world premiere on 7 August 2026 in Halberstadt, is a chamber music composition for flute and bassoon, the instruments of the 2026 and 2024 Fanny Mendelssohn Sponsorship Award winners.
